How long do they usually last before they need to be replaced, due to stretching?
My Ka DOHC, is somewhere around 220k. Ever since I got it, its been making the timing chain noise like most 240's... But lately its been louder ( I think) and doesn't go away when warmed up like it usually does.
Do you think the timing chain needs to be replaced, If so both upper timing chains and the the lower one, or just the upper ones? Or if I remove the second upper chain guide will it go away?
I just don't want it to snap or something and fubar the valve train and related parts.
Thanks for your help!

At that high of milage its a good idea to replace all of the timing chains. However the noise you are prolly hearing is the chaing slapping the upper timing chain guide, do a search on google or nico and you will see how to remove it so the sound goes away. Also if it hits it enough it will break the guide and it will fall into your motor like it did with Jonnie Fraz' SOHC motor. There is actually a service bulletin for Nissan that tells there techs to remove the guide whenever the car comes in for service.

I know for a fact Rob that its not the upper timing chain guide cause we removed it cause it was broken. Is there anything else you can think of?

THere are 2 guides if i remember right it's usually the upper one that makes the most noise but I have read that people romoved both however I dunno if this is what is says to do in the FSM. If its making a lot of clatter then the problem may be something worse like part of the guide is in the motor chewing shit up. Really the only way to find out is to pull the front cover off and take a look but at that point u might as well change the chain since u have the cover off anyways.
