I am currently trying to find out everything there is to know about my car, and I need a question answered, What is the VVT-i. Is it like V-tec or what? I know it has to do with the valves, but what is special about it? Did Toyota make their own V-tec and changed the name? hmmm.gif

VVVT-I stands for Variable Valve Timing w/ Intelligence

SEE:

And even more info here:

Note: Please realize some of the information avail at wikipedia will be incorrect, as it is not researched/verified in the same was an encyclopedia is/would be.

Toyota has had a variable intake/cam system in development/production much longer than honda. It's just that V-TEC is much more well known/widespread as a designation.

The 84-87 Trueno (Corolla) in japan was Toyota's (afaik) first vehicle with a variable intake system, it has a system called TVIS which is secondary intake butterfly's which open up at approx 43-4500 RPMS to allow a broader/smoother torque band across the board. Honda didn't start using the same idea until the GS-R/B18c1 in 94 or 95 (? unsure of when)
